The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Timothy D. Iwanczyk (ASN: RA-14941289), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Sergeant Iwanczyk distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 11 November 1967, while serving as a rifle squad leader with Company C, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 503d Infantry, 173d Airborne Brigade (Separate) engaged in military operations against an armed enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. Company C was conducting a search and destroy operation when it was suddenly attacked by a North Vietnamese battalion. Sergeant Iwanczyk quickly maneuvered his men to the right side of the company perimeter. Observing that the lead element had suffered a considerable number of casualties on the initial encounter, Sergeant Iwanczyk hurried to assist in the evacuation of the wounded. He personally carried three wounded comrades to safety and upon his return to assist a fourth, three enemy soldiers blocked his path. Sergeant Iwanczyk killed the enemy and proceeded to the battle area. Realizing that the right side of the perimeter was becoming weak and in danger of being overrun by another enemy assault, Sergeant Iwanczyk crawled approximately thirty meters in front of it and emplaced two Claymore mines which resulted in several enemy killed and wounded. When a relief force arrived, Sergeant Iwanczyk quickly positioned the men to repeal further enemy attacks. Sergeant Iwanczyk’s inspirational leadership, demonstrated courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
