The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Edgar Lewis, III, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed enemy force while serving with Company B, 5th Battalion (Airmobile), 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in the Kingdom of Cambodia. First Lieutenant Lewis distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 17 May 1970 in the Kingdom of Cambodia. When his platoon came under intense enemy fire from a large hostile force, First Lieutenant Lewis, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, moved from position to position directing the fire of his men and encouraging them. When the company commander became wounded, First Lieutenant Lewis immediately assumed command of the company and strategically directed the second platoon into advantageous firing positions which put heavy pressure on the enemy force. When the artillery forward observer was seriously wounded, First Lieutenant Lewis, while exposed to heavy enemy fire, directed devastating air and field artillery on the enemy emplacements. His valiant efforts and professional tactics of jungle warfare were instrumental in the sound defeat of the enemy force. First Lieutenant Lewis’ gallantry in action and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
