The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Duane O. Egbert (ASN: RA-17534139), United States Army, for gallantry in action against an armed hostile force on 23 July 1968 in the Republic of Vietnam. Staff Sergeant Egbert distinguished himself by intrepid actions while serving as the Scout Section Leader of the 3d Platoon of Troop A, 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, Americal Division. On that date, Sergeant Egbert was leading his scout section in an area search mission when he learned that the 2d Platoon had made contact with a battalion-size force of North Vietnamese Regulars and Viet Cong near Duc An. Immediately, Sergeant Egbert led both his section and the remainder of the 3d Platoon against the enemy positions. Upon realizing that the armored cavalry assault vehicle could not breach the steep banks and thick hedgerows, he immediately dismounted his track and led his men in a dismounted assault on the enemy, personally killing two of the insurgents. His platoon was credited with killing eleven of the insurgents and capturing one crew served weapon and a large cache of ammunition. Staff Sergeant Egbert’s exceptional heroism and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division, and the United States Army.
