The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Palmer F. Hawley (ASN: 37468411), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 329th Infantry Regiment, 83d Infantry Division, in action on 2 April 1945 in Germany. While leading a patrol against a farmhouse that contained some enemy troops, Sergeant Hawley with complete disregard for his personal safety, stood in the open and attempted to negotiate their surrender. While thus exposed the enemy troops began to deploy and Sergeant Hawley unhesitatingly gave the order for his patrol to open fire. Throughout this action, he displayed outstanding initiative and coolness under fire until the enemy had been overcome. During this heroic act Sergeant Hawley was killed by enemy artillery. The conspicuous courage and aggressive leadership of this non-commissioned officer reflect the highest credit upon himself and exemplify the finest traditions of the armed forces of the United States.
