Headquarters, I Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 84 (February 4, 1968)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Third Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Fourth Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) William M. Reynolds (ASN: 0-2238321), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight. Second Lieutenant Reynolds distinguished himself by heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 173d Airborne Brigade (Separate), in the Republic of Vietnam. On 3 April 1967, Lieutenant Reynolds was serving as the pilot of a rescue helicopter on a mission to extract a wounded member of a reconnaissance element. A previous attempt had been unsuccessful and had resulted in a dustoff ship being shot down. Regardless of this, Lieutenant Reynolds took the mission, located the unit in the dense jungle and made his approach. He was taken under heavy hostile fire, but succeeded in landing and loading the wounded man aboard. Upon departure, he was again taken under fire, but succeeded in completing the mission. Lieutenant Reynolds’ outstanding display of flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
