The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Douglas Bruce Baum (ASN: RA-19891308), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Sergeant Baum distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 18 November 1967 in the vicinity of Dak To, Republic of Vietnam, while serving as a squad leader with Company A, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 503d Infantry, 173d Airborne Brigade (Separate). Sergeant Baum was placing his squad in position as part of the company perimeter when it came under attack with heavy and continuous enemy fire from all sides. Though wounded in the initial contact, he directed his men in returning such deadly, accurate fire that the North Vietnamese soldiers momentarily ceased their assault. As the enemy attacked for the second time, Sergeant Baum, with total disregard for his personal safety, exposed himself once again to lead and assist his men in the most critical moments. Only after he was wounded a second time did he take cover. Prior to being mortally wounded, he killed two North Vietnamese army machine gunners himself. Sergeant Baum’s display of exceptional heroism and leadership were in the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
