The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) John C. Brashears (ASN: 0-306653), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 29th Infantry Division. On 12 June 1944, while traveling between his own and an adjacent headquarters, in the performance of his duties as Liaison Officer, Captain Brashears unexpectedly found himself in the midst of elements of our forces which were heavily engaged with the enemy. Correctly appraising the situation at this point, and realizing the need for prompt action to overcome enemy resistance which was impeding the advance of our forces, Captain Brashears organized and led a patrol which outflanked and overcame the enemy position, subjecting himself to heavy hostile fire without regard for his own safety. His courage and excellent judgment in a difficult and dangerous situation contributed materially to the success of the operation then in progress, and reflects great credit on himself and the Military Service.
