The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Emmet Everett Brown, III, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force, while serving with Detachment A-413, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), 1st Special Forces, in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Brown distinguished himself on 7 February 1970 while serving as acting advisor to an element of Vietnamese troops during combat operations in the Mekong Delta. As friendly elements approached a woodline while on a search and clear mission, heavy enemy fire pinned down and wounded a portion of the right flank element. Lieutenant Brown exposed himself to enemy fire to advance to the position of his wounded comrades. After successfully evacuating the wounded under intense hostile fire, Lieutenant Brown directed helicopter gunships and tactical airstrikes on the enemy elements. He then led the friendly forces in several assaults of the enemy positions, successfully overrunning one single-handedly. Lieutenant Brown repeatedly exposed himself to hostile fire while placing suppressive fire on the enemy. First Lieutenant Brown’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
