The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class David Marvin Jolley, Jr. (ASN: 15674030), United States Army, for gallantry in action performed against a hostile force while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), near Binh Dinh, Republic of Vietnam. On the night of 21 May 1966, Specialist Fourth Class Jolley’s company made an assault on a Viet Cong stronghold and was brought under intense sniper and automatic weapons fire. Specialist Fourth Class Jolley’s squad had maneuvered to a position from where devastating fire was delivered upon the enemy positions. The enemy soldiers tried to escape by running up the ridge where his squad was located. Despite the heavy return fire, Specialist Fourth Class Jolley, without hesitation and completely disregarding his own personal safety, exposed himself in a pathway and heroically destroyed several fleeing enemy soldiers who rushed his squad. Continuing the assault in the most difficult jungle terrain, Specialist Fourth Class Jolley was hit and mortally wounded. A medic was immediately called for, but Specialist Fourth Class Jolley shouted, “Don’t worry about me! Keep Going! Keep going!” His courageous actions inspired his comrades in battle and brought them to greater heights of achievement. His gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
