The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Alan Peter Jones (ASN: 15955507), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Troop B, 2d Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 101st Air Cavalry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam, on 8 April 1968. Sergeant Jones distinguished himself while on a combat operation near Hue, Republic of Vietnam. His platoon was engaged in clearing a bunker complex when his squad was pinned down by semi-automatic weapons fire from a well-camouflaged bunker. Sergeant Jones, Fire Team Leader, elected to move upon the bunker at the risk of his own life, while the others covered his advance. As another man from his team was advancing, Sergeant Jones gave him instructions to flank the bunker and move out of the direct danger area in which Sergeant Jones, himself, was maneuvering in order to get into grenade throwing range. Sergeant Jones heroically assaulted the bunker and threw his grenade, but was mortally wounded while doing so. His actions aided greatly to his platoon’s mission and helped to defeat the enemy. Sergeant Jones personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
