The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant [then Specialist Fourth Class] Arthur James Anderson (ASN: US-67084599), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Specialist Fourth Class Anderson distinguished himself by heroic actions on 23 February 1969, while serving with Company B, 2d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. While in their night defensive position at Fire Support Base DIAMOND, Company C came under intense rocket, mortar and heavy machine gun fire followed by several human wave assaults. Specialist Anderson was a member of an ambush patrol at the time of the attack. Specialist Anderson saw an enemy mortar crew bringing effective fire on the base camp. Although the enemy was firing on his position, Specialist Anderson, with complete disregard for his own safety, stood up and fired upon the enemy mortar pit silencing the hostiles. Before he could get to cover Specialist was fatally wounded by enemy weapons fire. His valorous actions silenced an enemy position at the cost of his own life. Specialist Anderson contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and the defense of the fire support base. Specialist Anderson’s personal bravery, aggressiveness and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
