The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Senior Airman Johnny R. Chaffin, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Berry Field, Nashville Municipal Airport, Nashville, Tennessee, on 17 March 1988. On that date, Airman Chaffin’s quick response was instrumental in bringing a wheel well fire under control of a transient C-130H aircraft. With complete disregard to his own safety, he quickly extinguished the fire thereby preventing injury and potential loss of life to the crew and destruction of the aircraft. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Airman Chaffin reflect great credit upon himself, the Air National Guard, and the United States Air Force.
