The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Mosie L. Walker (ASN: RA-14641168), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Staff Sergeant Walker distinguished himself by exceptional gallantry in the Republic of Vietnam on 27 December 1968, while serving as platoon sergeant in Company A, 3d Battalion (Airborne), 503d Infantry, 173d Airborne Brigade (Separate). On the above date, Company A had the mission of secure landing zone near Dong Tre and moving to relieve pressure from Company D, which was engaged in a fire fight. As the helicopter set down, the company came under enemy fire from all sides. Sergeant Walker’s platoon immediately received devastating fire from an open bunker and several foxholes. Sergeant Walker immediately analyzed the situation and realized that the fire had to be stopped in order to save the platoon. He placed his men in position and began to crawl through the fire toward the bunker. In spite of automatic weapons fire which was hitting all men around him, he crawled to within fifteen meters of the bunker and then threw one grenade. He returned to the platoon position and obtained more hand grenades and then once more crawled out to the bunker. After throwing two more grenades into the bunker, he was returning once more to his platoon when he was engaged by fire from a foxhole and was hit by grenade fragments. Sergeant Walker threw another grenade toward the foxhole and continued to crawl back toward his platoon. In spite of his wound, he refused medical treatment or evacuation and insisted on remaining with his men until the action was over. When the company perimeter was secured, examination of the enemy positions showed fourteen enemy killed in the bunker and two others near the foxhole. Sergeant Walker’s outstanding courage assisted tremendously in the defeat of this numerically superior enemy force. His performance was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
