The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Dennis P. Gill (ASN: US-52752272), United States Army, for gallantry action. Specialist Four Gill distinguished himself by exceptional gallantry in the Republic of Vietnam on 6 May 1968, while serving with Company B, 2d Battalion (Airborne), 503d Infantry 173d Airborne Brigade (Separate). On the above date, the recon squad of Company B made contact with a North Vietnamese company. During the initial stages of the battle a member of the recon squad of Company B was knocked unconscious by an enemy concussion grenade and the squad radio telephone operator was wounded by small arms fire. When he saw two fallen comrades lying exposed to enemy fire, Specialist Gill ran out through the intense fire to attempt to bring the wounded men to safety. Before Specialist Gill could reach him, one of the wounded men was hit again and was killed. Specialist Gill then turned to the other man and slowly carried him to a safe position. When he had accomplished this, Specialist Gill returned to the area of heaviest contact and continually exposed himself to the hostile fire in order to bring maximum firepower upon the enemy positions. His accurate fire contributed greatly to forcing the enemy to withdrawal. Specialist Gill’s aggressiveness and bravery were instrumental in the defeat of the enemy force on that day and his courage was an inspiration to all who observed him. Specialist Gill’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
