The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Platoon Sergeant John K. Weber (ASN: RA-16863378), United States Army, for gallantry in action: Staff Sergeant Weber distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions in the Republic of Vietnam on 11 November 1967, while participating in a combat operation with Company C, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 503d Infantry, 173d Airborne Brigade (Separate). Company C came under a heavy enemy mortar, rocket and small arms attack from an estimated North Vietnamese battalion. With complete disregard for his own safety and exposing himself to heavy enemy fire, Sergeant Weber dashed through the bullet swept area and began carrying wounded personnel to safety. While carrying two wounded men at the same time, he was wounded in the chest by an AK-47 round, but refused medical evacuation and continued to move forward. Although the enemy continued to make fierce attacks upon the perimeter, Sergeant Weber halted the attack on one portion by killing twelve enemy as they massed for an attack upon his position. When the ammunition began to dwindle, he moved from one position to another, encouraging his men and redistributing the remaining ammunition. Sergeant Weber’s extraordinary heroism in close combat against a numerically superior enemy force was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
