The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Lloyd Woolverton, Jr. (ASN: 0-5422450), United States Army, for gallantry in action involving close combat with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Woolverton distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 20 May 1969 while serving as Commanding Officer, Company B, 3d Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, on a sweep and clear mission in Dinh Tuong Province. When his company came under intense fire from a numerically superior enemy force, Captain Woolverton, disregarding his own safety, repeatedly exposed himself to the fusillade of enemy fire in order to direct and position his element. When casualties occurred, he again exposed himself to personally assist in their evacuation. When the wounded had been evacuated, Captain Woolverton led his command on a successful assault of the enemy positions. Captain Woolverton’s extraordinary heroism in close combat with an armed hostile force is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
