The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Warrant Officer (W1) Alvis Ray Faverty, Jr. (ASN: W-3160183), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations against an armed hostile force while serving with the 240th Assault Helicopter Company, 214th Aviation Battalion, 12th Aviation Group, 1st Aviation Brigade, in the Republic of Vietnam, on 18 August 1968. Warrant Officer Faverty distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander of a UH-1H helicopter in support of a friendly infantry unit near Hiop Hoa. Warrant Officer Faverty volunteered to extract the unit, which was in heavy combat with the enemy. He exercised superior skill by flying at low level to avoid numerous enemy positions. He courageously landed at their position and the unit boarded the aircraft. As the last soldier boarded, the enemy left their positions and attacked the aircraft. During this enemy assault, Warrant Officer Faverty was fatally wounded. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
