The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Sherman L. Jackson (ASN: US-54379844), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 709th Maintenance Battalion, 9th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Jackson distinguished himself by valorous actions on 6 November 1967, while serving as automotive repairman testing a new outboard motor and boat on the My Tho River at Dong Tam, Vietnam. During that morning, Specialist Jackson saw an explosion in a boat operated by men from Company D, 15th Engineer Battalion. Without hesitation or regard for personal safety, Specialist Jackson directed his boat to the scene of the accident in order to offer his assistance to the imperiled soldiers. Seeing one of the men floating unconscious in the water, Specialist Jackson unhesitatingly swam to the victim and pulled him aboard his boat. Specialist Jackson then took the engineer boat in tow and took the remaining injured men to a medical facility. Specialist Jackson’s extreme courage and aggressive determination were an inspiration to all and contributed significantly to saving the lives of two men. Specialist Jackson’s heroic actions and unwavering devotion to his fellow soldiers are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
