The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James J. Walker, Jr. (ASN: 32913676), United States Army, for gallantry in action on Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 15 March 1945. As the first platoon of an infantry company of which Private Walker was a member, advanced on its objective they were suddenly stopped by heavy rifle and machine gun fire from their right. The platoon leader attempted to contact the second platoon by radio and secure their aid but the radio was out. The ground between the two platoons was covered by enemy machine gun fire and had very little cover. Private Walker volunteered to run over and make contact with the second platoon. As he started across the gap between the two platoons the enemy opened up with a heavy machine gun. He continued on even though he was under heavy fire. By using what cover was available, he managed to reach the second platoon. As communications were still out he volunteered to re-cross the span between the two platoons and inform the third platoon leader of the plans. This time as he reached the open area, the enemy was alert and put down a heavy volume of machine gun and rifle fire. In spite of the enemy fire he continued on his mission and miraculously reached the third platoon without injury. The plan was put into action and the objective successfully taken. The courageous action of Private Walker, without regard to his personal safety, is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
