The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant James Giles (ASN: US-56734018), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in the Republic of Cambodia. When his element was suddenly hit by an aggressive insurgent force from fortified positions, Specialist Fourth Class Giles immediately exposed himself to the intense enemy fire as he moved toward the hostile position providing covering fire for his comrades. Using a massive barrage of firepower, he neutralized one of the enemy and forced the aggressors to seek cover. His gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
