Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 6394 (July 5, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Glenn Ray Fleitman (ASN: US-54443816), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, on 8 June 1969 in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Sergeant Fleitman was serving as Platoon Sergeant with his unit on a reconnaissance in force operation approximately 26 kilometers northwest of Lai Khe. As the friendly force proceeded through a region of dense jungle, it was suddenly subjected to intense small arms fire from five North Vietnamese Army soldiers who immediately fled along a trail. Learning of the situation, the platoon leader immediately began to chase the insurgents along the path. Realizing the peril of the platoon leader’s action, Sergeant Fleitman deployed the platoon into strategic positions and then ran after the platoon leader in an attempt to offer assistance. When a burst of enemy automatic weapons fire killed the platoon leader and severely wounded Sergeant Fleitman, he ignored his injuries and led his men on a determined assault of the aggressor emplacements. While leading his men in a triumphant rout of the insurgent force, Sergeant Fleitman was mortally wounded. His courageous initiative, inspiring determination, and selfless concern for his fellow soldiers distinguishes Sergeant Fleitman as a soldier of the highest caliber. Staff Sergeant Fleitman’s unquestionable valor in close combat against numerically superior hostile forces is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
