The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Dennis Robert Carr (ASN: 0-5336461), United States Army, for gallantry in action in the Republic of Vietnam while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 101st Air Cavalry Division, on 3 March 1968. First Lieutenant Carr distinguished himself while on a combat operation near Phu Loc, Republic of Vietnam. His platoon, the point element of the company, was moving along a narrow hilltop trail. As the forward element of the platoon rounded a bend in the trail, they were engaged by an undetermined size enemy force with small arms, automatic weapons, and hand carried artillery pieces. The initial assault severely wounded four of the platoon’s men and pinned down the remainder of the platoon. Seemingly oblivious to the torrent of enemy fire, Lieutenant Carr, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, rushed to the aid of the wounded men. As Lieutenant Carr dragged two of the men to a less hazardous location, the enemy shifted their fire toward him. With determination, he again braved the intense enemy fire and successfully dragged the remaining men to safety. Lieutenant Carr then withdrew his platoon without further casualties, and radioed for tactical air and artillery support against the enemy positions which resulted in the complete routing of the enemy force. Lieutenant Carr’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
