The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Mark Niggol Enari (ASN: 0-5318340), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Enari distinguished himself on 2 December 1966 while serving as Platoon Leader in Company A, 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, which was on a search and destroy mission. Engaging the enemy who were in heavily-fortified position, First Lieutenant Enari organized, maintained and directed an aggressive assault on the enemy. In order to properly organize his assault, he continuously exposed himself to heavy automatic rifle fire from bunkers and sniper fire from the trees to his front. Discovering that five soldiers were wounded and lying in an exposed position, First Lieutenant Enari took immediate action. With complete disregard for his own safety, he moved to a machine gun position and again exposed himself to enemy fire to personally direct heavy fire against the nearest enemy position which permitted the wounded men to be moved to safety. While performing this act, First Lieutenant Enari was mortally wounded. First Lieutenant Enari’s gallantry in action in close combat against an enemy force is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
