The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Charles Earl Faggett (ASN: RA-18608355), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Company A, 4th Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division in the Republic of Vietnam on 29 January 1967. Staff Sergeant Faggett distinguished himself while occupying a defensive position in an area of close vegetation, when his squad came under intense enemy small arms fire from an unknown number of Viet Cong forces. Ignoring the dangers of the enemy fire, he left the safety of his position to check upon the welfare of the men in his squad. In the process of doing this heroic deed, he was severely wounded when the enemy unleashed a mortar barrage on his position. Although in great pain and bleeding profusely, he twice refused medical attention until three men of his squad had been treated for wounds received during the intense combat situation. While the three casualties were being treated, due to his explicit demands, Sergeant Faggett died of his wounds. His heroic act of self-sacrifice, at the cost of his own life, was significant in saving the lives of the three wounded soldiers. Staff Sergeant Faggett’s personal bravery, devotion to his fellow man, and his outstanding display of courage were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
