The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Paul Robert Edmond (ASN: US-56508306), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Company B, 2d Battalion, 2d Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam on 9 June 1969. On this date, Private First Class Edmond was serving as a rifleman with his mechanized company on a reconnaissance in force operation west of An Loc. As the friendly unit made intense contact with a North Vietnamese Army force, he dismounted his armored vehicle and began advancing toward the enemy. While placing a suppressive barrage on the insurgents, he noticed that the heavy machine gunner on a track was experiencing difficulties with his malfunctioned weapon. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Private First Class Edmond braved a hail of hostile rounds as he climbed atop the armored personnel carrier and repaired the machinegun. Ignoring the aggressor barrage raking the area, he assisted the machine gunner by feeding ammunition into the weapon and maneuvering to other tracks for re-supply ammunition. Continuing to help put forth devastating fire in support of the ground troops, Private First Class Edmond was mortally wounded by an exploding rocket-propelled grenade. His exemplary courage, intrepid determination, and heroic professionalism significantly contributed to the successful accomplishment of his unit’s mission. Private First Class Edmond’s unquestionable valor in close combat against numerically superior hostile forces was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
