The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant James Terrance Feeney (ASN: US-54976349), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Sergeant Feeney distinguished himself by heroic actions on 2 February 1969, while serving with Troop A, 3d Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. As the unit assaulted enemy hedgerows and crossed through, they received intense enemy fire. Without hesitation, Sergeant Feeney put down a heavy base of fire. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Feeney exposed himself to the enemy fire as he remained on top of his vehicle putting suppressive fire on the insurgents. Spotting an enemy position, he stood up and threw two grenades killing several enemy troops. While in this exposed position he was fatally wounded. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and the defeat of the enemy force. Sergeant Feeney’s personal bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
