The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Mark Migliore (ASN: RA-11858678), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Sergeant Migliore distinguished himself by exceptionally gallant actions in connection with military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam on 21 August 1968, while serving as a Squad Leader in the 4.2 inch mortar platoon, Company E, 3d Battalion (Airborne), 503d Infantry Regiment, 173d Airborne Brigade (Separate). On this date, in the early morning hours, Sergeant Migliore’s unit came under heavy mortar, rocket, automatic weapons and small arms fire, followed immediately with a ground attack by a numerically superior enemy force. The initial incoming rounds knocked out the fire direction bunker and forced the fire direction personnel to move to an alternate position. Without wire communications and realizing that a delay in placing effective fire on the enemy could result in increased friendly casualties, Sergeant Migliore immediately moved through the intense hostile fire to obtain the vital data for his mortars. Shortly after he reached the fire direction building it was struck by B-40 rockets. Sergeant Migliore moved through the intense fire to assist a fellow soldier who had been wounded by B-40 rocket fragments and falling debris. While moving his fallen comrade to a safe position, Sergeant Migliore was wounded in the right leg. Although temporarily blinded and unable to walk, he continued to shield the wounded soldier until other members of his squad came to his assistance. After regaining his eyesight, he assumed the position of observer for all the mortars still in operation. With complete disdain for the murderous hostile fire, he remained in an exposed position through the remainder of the battle and adjusted extremely accurate fire upon the attacking enemy force. His personal bravery at great risk to his own life was directly responsible for inflicting heavy casualties on the attacking enemy and resulted in t heir defeat and withdrawal. Sergeant Migliore’s gallant actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
