The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Norman W. Clark (ASN: RA-16826634), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy. Sergeant Clark distinguished himself by heroic actions on 2 May 1968 near An Khe, Republic of Vietnam. On this date Sergeant Clark was riding on a vehicle on Highway 19 when the observed a road grader as it hit some unknown explosive device. Sergeant Clark unhesitatingly jumped off the truck and rushed to assist two seriously wounded personnel. While administering aid to these men, Sergeant Clark saw a more seriously wounded man lying approximately twenty-five meters from the road. Although there was a possibility of mines being in the area, Sergeant Clark, with complete disregard for his own safety moved to the man and began administering first aid. The injured man’s arm was almost severed from his body and Sergeant Clark immediately took the necessary actions to prevent the man from bleeding to death. Through his courage and timely actions, he was instrumental in saving a fellow soldier’s life. Sergeant Clark’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
