The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Alvin G. Hogsett, United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with the 191st Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter), in the Republic of Vietnam on 22 May 1969. First Lieutenant Hogsett distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as air mission commander while inserting elements of the 9th Infantry Division near Ciau Duc. He directed the fire power of helicopter gunships onto numerous enemy held structures and identified enemy held positions by flying dangerously low and dropping smoke markers. First Lieutenant Hogsett exposed himself to murderous automatic weapons fire while extracting and re-inserting the infantry commander. He aided in medical evacuation and re-supply, directed armed helicopter fire support and coordinated airstrikes. As a direct result of his gallantry and professionalism, over one hundred enemy were killed and numerous weapons were seized or destroyed. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
