The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Major (Infantry) Ray L. Sandlin, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 18 May 1969. Major Sandlin distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions when he prevented a small boy from drowning. He observed the boy struggling in the water, and without regard for his personal well being, raced headlong into the gale-leashed surf , reaching the child just as he was going under. With the boy safely in hand Major Sandlin began his long hard fight back through the breakers and murderous undertow. Once safely on the beach the child required first aid to help him expel the large volume of sea water he had swallowed. A brief period of time passed before the boy was complete conscious and able to talk. Because of his unselfish regard for his own safety and his dedication to a fellow human being, Major Sandlin put his own life in jeopardy to save the life of the small Vietnamese boy.
