The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Dale E. Wampler, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 17 April 1969. Specialist Fourth Class Wampler distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as crew chief on a light observation helicopter, on a visual reconnaissance mission north of Tay Ninh. When the pilot spotted a Caucasian man, clad in black pajamas leaning against a tree, he made a vertical descent to get near the victim. Seeing that the helicopter could not land, Specialist Wampler leaped from the aircraft and dashed twenty-five meters through heavily wooded terrain to rescue the victim. He then voluntarily gave his seat to the American prisoner of war and helped him into the helicopter. He secured his M-60 machine gun and 250 rounds of ammunition and set up a fighting position to await the return of the helicopter. With no means of communication, he spent fifteen minutes before the helicopter returned for him. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
