The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Carlvin J. Griggs, United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with the 191st Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter), 1st Aviation Brigade, in the Republic of Vietnam on 15 July 1968. Major Griggs distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as air mission commander aboard a UH-1D command helicopter engaged in combat assault operations. A raging battle unfolded as he directed the insertion of seven companies of heliborne infantry over a scattered front. During this entire phase of the operation, the command and control ship was the most vulnerable target to enemy machine gunners in the vicinity, yet Major Griggs exuded superb poise and comported himself in an inimitably professional manner. When it became vital to re-supply the embattled companies below, he directed a successful series of re-supply sorties with masterful precision control techniques. Throughout the entire operation, he navigated through foul weather and relentless enemy fire to transport unit commanders to their engaged units. The success of the operation was, in large measure, directly attributable to Major Griggs’ brilliant leadership, penetrating tactical knowledge, and imperturbable judgment. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
