The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Robert Kandler, United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Troop A, 7th Armored Squadron, 1st Air Cavalry, 1st Aviation Brigade, in the Republic of Vietnam on 14 March 1969. First Lieutenant Kandler distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as pilot and team leader of a light fire team of OH-5A helicopters, while participating in operations in the vicinity of Huch Gia. When ground elements engaged an estimated two battalion force of Viet Cong, his observation team was assigned to screen for the friendly ground troops. While conducting the screening mission, his wingman’s ship received intense hostile fire, damaging his ship and wounding the pilot. Through exceptional flying ability, the damaged ship was landed in an open field surrounded by troops. The enemy began an attack on the downed aircraft and Lieutenant Kandler landed near the damaged aircraft and assisted its crew. As rescue operations were undertaken, he suppressed the area with his carbine, and had his observer carry the wounded pilot to his ship. Lieutenant Kandler was credited with killing ten enemy who were charging his position from the treeline. With the downed crew safely aboard, he took off while still under enemy fire. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
