The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Warrant Officer (W-2) James A. Blevins, United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with the 240th Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter), 1st Aviation Brigade, in the Republic of Vietnam, on 12 May 1969. Chief Warrant Officer Blevins distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as flight lead during a tactical emergency northwest of Thu Thua. Flying in a UH-1H helicopter, he successfully inserted friendly elements into a precarious landing zone to provide support and blocking forces for the friendly elements that were in fierce contact with an estimated enemy battalion. He skillfully led the insertions, evading the friendly artillery, air strikes, and intense anti-aircraft and automatic fire,. As darkness and hazardous weather engulfed the area, he voluntarily led the flight into the landing zones. Despite the weather, darkness, and enemy fire he successfully completed all insertions and voluntary re-supply missions. Knowing the importance of the supplies he spent dangerous minutes in the landing zone in order to provide the infantry with needed ammunition, water, and first aid equipment. Chief Warrant Officer Blevins’ courage, alertness, and flying skill were instrumental in saving many American lives. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
