The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] William Charles Dimagard (ASN: 0-5340162), United States Army, for gallantry in action involving close combat against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Dimagard distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 28 March 1968, while serving as a Platoon Leader with Company C, 4th Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, on a reconnaissance in force mission in the Republic of Vietnam. When an element of his platoon came under intense automatic weapons fire and became pinned down by an unknown sized Viet Cong force in a well-fortified bunker complex, Lieutenant Dimagard immediately maneuvered the remainder of his men in a flanking movement against the enemy fortifications, in order to destroy the insurgents and relieve pressure on the beleaguered element. Completely disregarding his personal safety, Lieutenant Dimagard personally led the assault which demolished the positions and silenced the insurgent fire. During the furious exchange of fire, Lieutenant Dimagard was mortally wounded. Second Lieutenant Dimagard’s extraordinary heroism in close combat against a Viet Cong force was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
