The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class James Herbert Dye (ASN: US-51885614), United States Army, for gallantry in action against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Dye distinguished himself by intrepid actions on 14 May 1969 while serving as a rifleman with Company A, 1st Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment, 198th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. On that date, the company made contact with a North Vietnamese Army unit near Landing Zone PROFESSIONAL and was pinned down by the hostile fire. When the company commander organized an assault on the enemy positions, Private Dye attacked an enemy automatic weapons emplacement. During his assault, Private Dye was seriously wounded, but he continued to place effective suppressive fire on the enemy until he was mortally wounded. Through his timely and courageous actions, Private Dye greatly contributed to helping his unit successfully withdraw from the ambush. Private First Class Dye’s personal heroism, professional competence, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division, and the United States Army.
