Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 2996 (March 10, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class George Lewis Davis, Jr. (ASN: RA-12986115), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Private First Class Davis distinguished himself by heroic actions on 23 February 1969, while serving with Company C, 4th Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a sweep mission, Company C came under a heavy volume of automatic weapons fire from a large enemy force. During the initial contact, two men from Company C were fatally wounded, and left in the enemy kill zone as the unit pulled back. After the unit had regrouped, Private First Class Davis volunteered to recover the two men. With complete disregard for his own safety, Private First Class Davis exposed himself as he moved through 100 meters of deadly enemy fire, picked up one of the casualties and carried him back to the main unit. With one more of his comrades still in the kill zone, Private First Class Davis made another hazardous run through the bullet swept area but was unable to successfully complete the second evacuation. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. Private First Class Davis’ personal bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
