The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Clyde Ralph Coburn (ASN: US-56648161), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Coburn distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 9 December 1967, while serving as a machine gunner with Company D, 2d Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during a combat mission near Phan Thiet, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit came under intense hostile fire, Private First Class Coburn assaulted and succeeded in destroying an enemy emplacement. While moving against another hostile bunker, he drew the enemy fire to himself and away from his comrades. At this time Private First Class Coburn was mortally wounded. His gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
