The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Donald Shahan, United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam on 11 May 1969. Major Shahan distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Detachment Commander, 366th Aviation Support Detachment, 1st Aviation Brigade. When his position received intense mortar, rocket and small arms fire from a large enemy force, he continuously exposed himself in order to direct friendly fire and encourage his men. More than 100 enemy sappers assaulted his position and a hostile grenade exploded, painfully and severely wounding him. Despite the pain, he continued to crawl about his positions that he might direct fire, evacuate wounded and dead, and encourage his men to hold their positions. He steadfastly refused evacuation until the attack had been neutralized and all his men were treated or evacuated. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
