United States Military Academy Register of Graduates

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Major (Corps of Engineers) Bertram Arnold Bunting (ASN: 0-90686), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Bunting distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Operations Officer of the 86th Engineer Combat Battalion, 34th Engineer Group, 20th Engineer Brigade, in action against the enemy on 12 February 1968. On that date, the first day of the enemy’s Tet Offensive, Major Bunting volunteered to fly to the Company C location, isolated at Ben Luc, to assess the situation and aid in the defense. During the approach to Ben Luc, the aircraft received heavy ground fire and the crew chief was wounded and unable to fire his weapon. Major Bunting went to his aid and then returned the enemy fire, despite being wounded during this act. When the pilot was wounded, Major Bunting moved to his assistance, and while assisting him received a second serious wound. He subsequently died of his wounds. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Bunting, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
