Headquarters, U.S. Army Vietnam, General Orders No. 3691 (July 20, 1967)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Soldier’s Medal (Posthumously) to Sergeant First Class Bruce Edwin Boyer (ASN: RA-011325466), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy in the Republic of Vietnam while serving with Detachment A-427, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), 1st Special Forces. Sergeant First Class Boyer distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 6 June 1967 during a medical evacuation operation on Phu Quoc Island. Previously, United States Coast Guard team members attempted to rescue a wounded Vietnamese soldier, but were halted when sea turbulence trapped them on the beach. Upon being informed of the situation, Sergeant Boyer immediately volunteered to aid the beleaguered men. He elected to take the water route due to the amount of time involved. After gathering a crew, Sergeant Boyer set out on his mission. While in the process of moving toward the beach, the boat was capsized by the tremendous sea, throwing all personnel into the water. It was during this tragic incident that Sergeant Boyer lost his life. Sergeant First Class Boyer’s heroic actions, at the cost of his life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
