Headquarters, U.S. Army Vietnam, General Orders No. 6345 (November 14, 1966)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant First Class Charles George Borowsky (ASN: RA-11363662), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant First Class Borowsky distinguished himself on 10 October 1966 while serving as Senior Advisor to a Civilian Irregular Defense Group patrol during a search and destroy mission. When the point man signaled that he had discovered a network of booby traps, Sergeant First Class Borowsky and two others went forward to investigate. As they reached the booby trapped area, they spotted a Viet Cong squad approximately 40 meters away and immediately opened fire. The Viet Cong apparently had no knowledge of the remaining CIDG soldiers in the rear and began to flank Sergeant First Class Borowsky and his two comrades, pinning them down with intense fire. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Sergeant First Class Borowsky, with complete disregard for his safety, stood up, exposed himself, and began directing a counterattack. Although he was exposed to a deadly crossfire, Sergeant First Class Borowsky remained on his feet, directing the advance of his patrol until he was mortally wounded by Viet Cong fire. Through his courage and outstanding leadership, he inspired his comrades to force the Viet Cong into a disorganized withdrawal. Sergeant First Class Borowsky’s gallantry in action against a hostile force was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
