The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Ernie Lee Burgamy (ASN: US-53611167), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Burgamy distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 4 July 1968, while serving as a rifleman with Company C, 2d Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Division, during a combat mission near Camp Evans, Republic of Vietnam. As he was walking with his platoon through dense vegetation and he tripped a grenade booby trap, Private First Class Burgamy immediately yelled for everyone to take cover. When he saw that a South Vietnamese soldier who was with the platoon had not understood the warning, he placed his life in danger in order to push the soldier out of the impact area of the grenade, thereby sacrificing his life in order to save another’s. Private First Class Burgamy’s gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
