The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Lanny Ross Bolding (ASN: US-53430327), United States Army, for gallantry in action. On 16 February 1967, Private First Class Bolding, a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 22d Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, was with the point squad, as Company A was conducting search and destroy operations west of Pleiku. A sudden burst of intense enemy fire inflicted several casualties on the squad. After hastily setting up a defense perimeter, the remainder of the squad began to evacuate casualties from the immediate area. Private First Class Bolding started back with a wounded comrade, but was, himself, wounded in the process. Nevertheless, he continued to assist the injured man. As soon as a medic arrived, Private First Class Bolding dug a position, which was to be an improvised aid station for the many wounded personnel. He then entered the enemy killing zone repeatedly to aid in the evacuation of his wounded comrades, each time exposing himself to deadly fire. He was responsible for moving six wounded men to safety. Private First Class Bolding was moving forward again when he was mortally wounded by enemy fire. His actions were undoubtedly responsible for saving the lives of several fellow soldiers. This outstanding display of courage and concern for the welfare of his comrades was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
