The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Transportation Corps) Stanley B. Albrecht (ASN: 0-5244128), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the 189th Assault Helicopter Company, 1st Aviation Brigade, in the Republic of Vietnam on 15 July 1968. First Lieutenant Albrecht distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while piloting a troop carrying helicopter during the extraction of a ground unit in heavy contact west of Dak To. Under intense enemy fire, he approached the landing zone, hovered high over the trees, and lowered ropes for the extraction of the three man unit. The enemy concentration was so heavy that constant attack by four armed helicopters failed to greatly decrease the enemy fire, and there was fighting in the landing zone over which he was hovering. Through his great skill and determination, the rescue was accomplished. Without First Lieutenant Albrecht’s poise under fire, the ground personnel would probably have been annihilated. His action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
