The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fifth Class Ronald E. St. Pierre (ASN: RA-11441405), United States Army, for gallantry in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with the 155th Assault Helicopter Company, 1st Aviation Brigade, in the Republic of Vietnam on 4 October 1968. Specialist Fifth Class St. Pierre distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action during an intense enemy mortar and rocket barrage on the Camp Coryell compound at Ban Me Thuot. While serving as a guard in the helicopter parking area during the early morning hours, his position was suddenly assailed by exploding enemy mortar rounds and automatic weapons fire. He alertly spotted an enemy sapper team cutting through the perimeter fence near his position and immediately released two signal flares to alert the rest of the compound to the danger. Thus revealing his position, he came under even more intense enemy fire. Nevertheless, he proceeded to his machine gun and began providing effective fire which cut down the lead elements of the invading enemy unit. Specialist St. Pierre’s courageous performance ultimately resulted in a complete withdrawal of the enemy forces and prevented the destruction of numerous valuable aircraft. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
