The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Lindsay G. Bales, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy at Hunter Liggett Military Reservation, Jolon, California on 24 June 1971. On that date while driving to his company area, Specialist Bales witnessed an automobile crash at the Jolon-King entrance to the Hunter Liggett Military Reservation. Halting his car, he immediately ran to the scene of the accident, kicked in the window on the passenger side, and dragged the driver and passenger from the vehicle, which had burst into flames. Both men were trapped in the vehicle and would have perished had it not been for Specialist Bales’ quick actions. Following the removal of the two occupants from the burning vehicle to the King City Hospital, Specialist Bales was treated at the Hunter Liggett Military Reservation Dispensary for second-degree burns sustained in this spectacular rescue operation. Specialist Bales’ presence of mine, courage, and disregard for his own life in this hazardous situation prevented the loss of two lives. By his courageous action, humanitarian regard for his fellow man, and dedication of service to his country, Specialist Four Bales has reflected great credit on himself and the United States Army.
