The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class William C. Mcgee, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 11 March 1971, while on leave at his home in Boston, Massachusetts. He was approached by a 14-year-old girl, who told him that she had been robbed at gunpoint by two men. She was able to accurately describe one of the assailants. Specialist Magee went immediately to the scene of the robbery, where he spotted the two men. Alone, and aware that one of the men was armed with a revolver, he decided to follow them until he could attract a policeman. The thieves, however, became aware of his surveillance and attempted to elude him. Displaying great courage, Specialist Magee gave chase and subdued one of the men until police arrived. This action led to the subsequent arrest of the other thief. Sergeant McGee’s heroic actions earned for him the gratitude of the Boston Police Department and reflected great credit on him and the United States Army.
