The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant First Class Carl G. Dinger, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy in the course of preventing the loss by fire of a valuable Model 60-A1 tank at Nunenroth, Germany, on 31 October 1968. Sergeant Dinger, in cooperation with another soldier from his unit, ignoring shouted warnings to stay clear, proceeded to approach the burning vehicle, opened the rear deck doors, and directed portable fire extinguishers into the engine compartment, thereby suffocating the fire. Further, Sergeant Dinger entered the tank while it was still ablaze and turned off the master switch and fuel pumps. He also removed live ammunition from the ready racks and extinguished flames on the inside of the vehicle; thus eliminating the possibility of an explosion. In the process of extinguishing the fire, Sergeant Dinger received burns on his face and hands. This act of heroism reflected great credit on him, his unit, and the United States Army.
