Department of the Army, General Orders No. 50 (September 8, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Charles J. Hatten, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy at Fort Benning, Georgia on 3 September 1969. On that date Sergeant Hatten exited from the aircraft just prior to the other jumper. During descent, at approximately 700 feet from the ground, the other parachutists collided with Sergeant Hatten by landing on top of his parachute. This caused the other man’s parachute to collapse and he began descending rapidly. Displaying a complete disregard for his own safety and exceptionally quick reactions, Sergeant Hatten grasped this man’s parachute canopy and held it firmly until both men were approximately 10 feet from the ground. Upon release the other man was able to make a safe parachute landing fall. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellow man, in the dedication of his service to his country, Sergeant Hatten has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
